The Ashley-Rakahuri Rivercare Group are asking volunteers to come along and help pull out some weeds along the river.
When: 9am -12pm , Sunday 4th August.
Sunday 11th August - Cancelled due to high river flow
A major problem for native birds breeding on our local Ashley-Rakahuri River is weed invasion – they will only nest on weed-free gravel. Earlier this year, the Ashley-Rakahuri Rivercare Group organised volunteer days to clear weeds from the most favoured nesting sites. These events have been both successful and enjoyable, mainly because the dominant weed, yellow lupin, is readily removed by hand.
The riverbed site chosen for clearing is alongside the Cones Road bridge.
Please gather in the picnic area at the south end of the bridge. Open to anyone, of any age, is welcome (but not dogs). It's also an excellent opportunity to learn more about what the group does to assist the birds.
What to bring: Gloves will be needed, and a small handsaw and/or grubber might be useful – but not vital. Make sure you have appropriate clothing for the day, plus footwear (which might get wet). There is no need to register your interest – just turn up by 9am. Thanks, see you there.
