Ashley/Rakahuri Flood Resilience - Winter Lecture Series

Join the Waimakariri Biodiversity Trust for the second talk in our Winter Lecture Series, where Environment Canterbury representatives will present on the Ashley–Rakahuri River Flood Resilience Project.

The project focuses on the 22 km reach of the Ashley/Rakahuri River and responds to increasingly severe rainfall events and ageing stopbanks. Environment Canterbury is assessing a range of resilience options, from upgraded stopbanks and secondary barriers to floodways, wetland creation and gravel management, to better protect Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Southbrook and Waikuku.

With $6.8 billion in national assets at stake, this work aims to strengthen long term community safety while balancing environmental, cultural and practical considerations. The presentation will outline the science, the proposed options, and how community feedback is shaping the next steps.
