Daiken-Saltwater Creek Plant Fund
Daiken NZ is sponsoring the Waimakariri Biodiversity Trust, giving $15,000 over two years (mid 2025 to mid 2027) under the Restorative Justice programme.

Under the terms of the programme the objective of this sponsorship is:
“… to fund the purchase of native plants by landowners neighbouring Saltwater Creek/Te Aka Aka estuary, located downstream of Daiken property boundaries. These planting activities should support native biodiversity initiatives occurring within DNZ’s property boundaries, aimed at ultimately improving the health of the waterway.”

The Trust is seeking applications for purchase of native plants to be used alongside Saltwater Creek or within 200m of the main stem or tributaries - as outlined in red below.

What we need to know about your plants/planting?
Applications will need to show:
-
The location of their proposal planting alongside Saltwater Creek or on tributaries within 200m of the main stem
-
A description of the proposed planting area and the areas up and downstream including where the plants will be used
-
How the site will be prepared and maintained (at least for the next 2 years) it is important to give the plants the best chance of surviving and this might involve things like the use of sprays or plant protectors which are outside the scope of this funding.
-
A description of any planting or biodiversity enhancement work already undertaken there or on neighbouring properties
-
The proposed species list with numbers and sizes of plants sought.

Need help with a species list?
We can help you prepare a plant list for your application if you are unsure what species to plant.
Contact us at office@wbt.org.nz for assistance.

How will WBT decide?
The applications will be assessed by WBT on:
-
How close is the planting area to the main stem of Saltwater Creek?
-
How well the area will be prepared, and how well plants will be maintained.
-
The extent to which the proposed planting will help or add to the habitat/biodiversity values of Saltwater Creek - does it have habitat value?
-
Whether the site could be part of a chain of small plantings along the Creek.
